In the book, Schroedinger had most of his other animal adventures when we lived on the ranch. Now, of course, we live in the city. We have a street in front of the house, neighbors on either side and a high fence in the back that separates us from a schoolyard. It was a beautiful early summer day today and Sandy was able to get this photo in our yard.
The deer has been here 2 days in a row. It seems to like the miner’s lettuce that grows all over. I’m in the middle of weed-whacking the yard and appreciate the help, that’s why I don’t chase it away. Sadly, I noticed that the tops of my seedling snap peas have disappeared. The yard is full of planter boxes, none of which show in the photo. I should also point out that the fence and garage are really vertical and it was the photographer who was leaning.
Before the raven arrived, Schroedinger was able to get quite close to the deer, as was I. It is wary, but not overly scared. When I get close, I talk quietly to it to keep it calm. It’s a beautiful sight to see. I don’t look forward to having to chase it away when my veggies get larger.
The Sunday before last, we were having cake on the porch to celebrate my birthday with my son, his wife and two boys. Someone noticed an animal that turned out to be a grey fox. It seemed to show no fear and slowly approached the porch. While I thought about rabies, my main fear was for Schroedinger’s safety. We got him in the house and the fox stayed in the yard for a while and then ambled off. It was also a beautiful sight to see.
Tomorrow is Schroedinger’s day to go to his doctor for a rabies shot. I have things all planned out so we can sneak up on him even though I’ve already explained to him what will happen. I hate to have to wrestle him out from under the bed if he gets wind that we’re going to stuff him into his carrier. He’s really smart, but I’d better be smarter.
